Family information

We are a ‘young’ retired couple with three children, all now adults in their 20’s and living away from home. They all love to visit and guests may have an opportunity to meet them. Our youngest son lives in London and loves opportunities to take our guests on personal guided tours, focused on their particular interests. Guests are encouraged to join in with our hobbies if they would like to. We both love to walk and explore locally and further afield. We enjoy finding out about the history of different places as well as looking at the buildings and scenery. We visit museums and galleries, both in the local area and in London. Both of us enjoy reading and cooking. Nigel is a great baker and Sue enjoys exploring vegetarian recipes.

About the teacher’s accommodation

Our home is a three bedroom dormer bungalow, with two guest bedrooms (one double and one single) and a guest bathroom downstairs. There is a big kitchen/dining room. This is where students take their formal lessons, sitting at the table or working at the computer. There is a desk in each bedroom for private study. We have fast broadband access which students use for the internet.  The house also has a large sitting room, with television and a sound system for guest as well as family use. In warmer weather guests enjoy sitting in the garden.

About the local area

Bishop’s Stortford is a historic market town of about 38,000 people in Hertfordshire, England. We have good transport links with the M11 motorway and  London Stansted Airport very close by. There is a good trainline service into London and Cambridge. Our house looks out on the park which means that we have a very quiet and peaceful situation, but only 5-7 minutes walk from the centre of town. There is delightful countryside around us with some beautiful historic villages a short drive away. Saffron Walden and Audley End house (English Heritage) are fairly local, with the Roman city of Colchester also easy to reach. The swimming pool and gym are close to the house. There is a cinema in town as well as pubs and a nightclub. It is possible to arrange horse riding locally or kayaking on the river.
