Teacher introduction

I am a qualified teacher of English language. I was a secondary school teacher for many years, teaching French and Spanish. As well as teaching English, I am a mathematics tutor. Before I went into teaching, I worked in international banking for over 12 years. During that time I worked in south east Asia as well as in the city of London. I enjoy being a home stay teacher as I can combine my love of teaching English with sharing the history and culture of England. I experienced being a home stay student when I was learning French which means I can empathise with my students. I feel that home stay teaching enables me to offer a first class, tailored learning experience to my students.

Teacher about the local area

I live in Harpenden, a small town north of London. It is a thriving place with good shops, restaurants and coffee houses. The town’s proximity to London means that local people tend to commute to the city for work. My house is a six minute walk to the centre of town and a 10 minute walk to the railway station. Leisure activities available include swimming, a gym, tennis courts, riding and a snow dome. The city of St Albans, which has an ancient cathedral and a Roman theatre to visit, is a short drive. The university city of Cambridge is a 60 minute drive. It is interesting to visit the picturesque colleges and to hire a boat to go on the river. The fast train to London means all the sights and attractions of the capital are easily accessible.
Teacher family
I live with my wife, Bridget. Bridget works locally in a university in an administrative role. She is a great cook and she is a member of a book club. Like me, Bridget speaks fluent French and Spanish. We have two grown up sons. Neil works in financial recruitment and Ashley works in computing. They live not far away and visit the house regularly.
Teacher how to get here by public

Luton and Stansted Airports are short taxi rides from my home (10 minutes and 40 minutes, respectively). From Gatwick Airport, take the direct train to Harpenden station (70 minutes) where I will be waiting. From Heathrow Airport, take the Express train or underground railway and catch a train from St Pancras station. The train from St Pancras to Harpenden takes 45 minutes.
Teacher hobbies and interests
I like to go walking and cycling in the local countryside. I am interested in history and I collect antiquarian books. I sing in a local choir. I like to keep to date with business and investment developments.
