South England

Ruth H

We live in Britain’s Ocean City, Plymouth which is a University town by the sea and within easy reach of Cornwall. My daughter and I enjoy music, theatre, walking, trips to the sea and countryside. We are both interested in healthy cooking, eating and exercise. We also love watching films. I enjoy helping people learn English and I can appreciate how difficult this can be at times. I am trying to learn Spanish and also improve my French. My daughter is studying languages at Sixth Form and also Mandarin so we both have an understanding about learning other languages and their cultures.
I enjoy teaching creatively covering all aspects and styles of learning. This allows students to learn as naturally as possible; the way in which we all learn our first language. I enjoy teaching both general English and exam preparation courses. I am also happy to try to arrange any specialisms or interests you have during your stay. Teaching English is a rewarding career and it is extremely satisfying helping students gain confidence.

 Family information

I have one daughter (1999) who lives at home with me. We are both interested in other cultures and languages. Travel is a great passion along with walking, healthy eating/living, films, theatre, rowing and music. My mother and father live nearby as do many friends. We are very fortunate to live in a wonderful part of England; in a city and yet by the sea and close to the moors (Dartmoor). There are train links to Totnes and Exeter along with Brittany Ferries to France and Spain.

You will find that no two days are the same. If the weather is good, then we generally go to some local beaches where we can play games, swim, snorkel, kayak and swim. There are surf schools, sailing/windsurfing tuition, tennis clubs, a new sports centre, large parks, Lido, Theatre Royal, Arts Centre, Museum and the Tate Art Gallery in St Ives in Cornwall, a train journey away. We have a piano and guitar at home which you are welcome to play or even try some piano lessons if you are interested in learning! There are some fabulous restaurants and you must try our local Fish and Chips, the Cornish Pasty and a Devon Cream Tea.

About the teacher’s accommodation

We live in a residential area which is made up of professionals and families. Our house is detached with a garden to the front and rear. Both gardens are full of vegetables, fruit trees and flowers. The student accommodation is all on the ground floor and comprises a shower/toilet room, a bedroom and own personal lounge space. There is also a small study area, DVD player, speakers for your laptop/tablet and free WIFI. You will have access to many English books and films. We can walk into Plymouth and also access two lovely local parks. The houses in the surrounding area are a mix of Victorian, Edwardian and mostly 1930 – 1950’s.

About the local area

Devon and Cornwall offer a vast selection of activities from surfing, sailing, kayaking, swimming, paddle boarding and any other sea related activities. We often go to the beach with friends and play rounders and volleyball (nothing too competitive!) The Life Centre offers a swimming and diving pool and is approximately a 30 minute walk from our home. The train station is 20 minutes by foot and also a National Express coach station. Brittany Ferries is a ten minute car journey away. The train offers access to Cornwall where you can discover wonderful historic houses (National Trust), gardens and lovely beaches/coves. Both Plymouth and Exeter offer great shopping experiences. Exeter has an airport and is also a University town. Plymouth has a ;mixture of old and new. The historica Barbican is full of street cafes and marinas. It also houses an acquarium. If time permits, then the Isles of Scilly are a must for visitors. A small archipelago of 5 inhabited islands along with rocky islets set off the southern tip of Cornwall, only accessible by boat or a small sea plane.

Activities you can do in the area
