About
Richard C

I qualified as an EFL teacher in 2017 and enjoyed the teaching experience so much that I have now stopped working in the computer industry to focus on English language teaching. I was born and raised in Sussex, and so I obviously found English quite easy to learn! However, twenty years ago I went to live in France, and there I had to learn French which wasn’t quite as easy for me.  Then, ten years ago I met my wife, Ilka, and she is German and in our time together I have learnt to speak German.

Academic information

I have a Cambridge CELTA qualification to teach English as a foreign language.  I also have a Computer Science diploma, and a swimming certificate (50 metres backstroke) which might come in handy one day.  In France I was awarded a BEPA, which is a French environmental vocational degree that allows me to plant hedges and clean out rivers.

Family information

My wife is German and works as an interpreter. She also runs a Feldenkrais class from home, and practises meditation, mindfulness, and breadmaking.  I have three children but they have all now left home to enjoy lives of their own, but still live nearby. I have various interests which include cycling, walking, swimming, art & photography. I like to go to the cinema, and the local theatre.  I have an interest in Sussex history and local landmarks.  I like to play table-tennis, and to watch football, rugby and motor racing. I sometimes go and see Premiership football at Brighton & Hove Albion.

About the teacher’s accommodation

We live in a lovely old town house just behind the beachfront in central Worthing.  It dates from about the year 1820 and has 2 spare bedrooms for students to use, one with a single bed and one with a double bed.  The student rooms have use of a private bathroom, if required.  At the back there is a small courtyard garden which we are in the process of making pretty.  At the front, a few steps away is the seafront.

About the local area

Worthing is a town of about 100,000 inhabitants, and we are lucky to live so close to the both the beach and the South Downs National Park.  The town itself is well known for its pier, but also a lovely old cinema and a number of theatres and other venues. There are a good variety of pubs, bars, shops, cafes and restaurants all within walking distance from us. The South Downs National Park is great for longer walks in the country, and can be reached by bus, or bike. The city of Brighton & Hove is 15 minutes on the train, or 40 minutes by bus. This is a tourist hotspot, and is great for its pubs, and clubs, and nightlife, as well as for the arts and other seaside attractions.
