South England

Rene C

I live in a big, old house on a farm in Devon. I have a passion for teaching English and I love meeting people, so homestay teaching English is my ideal job. I speak French and I spent a year in France as a student learning the language. It was a great way to improve my language skills and the experience means I can empathise with my students. I have recently retired after many years from farming and running a bottled spring water business. I am originally from New Zealand where I was a primary and middle school teacher. I have lived in England for 40 years.

About the teacher’s accommodation

My home is an old farmhouse with lots of character, situated within 70 hectares of beautiful Devon farmland.  It is within walking distance of the pretty, little village of Lifton. Lifton is in the county of Devon in south west England. There are lovely views from my house over the attractive surrounding countryside. Lifton has a farm shop with a restaurant as well as a couple of hotels.

About the local area

Devon is a popular holiday destination for many English people so you will find lots of different things to do. Swimming, horse riding, climbing, tennis, golf and fishing are just some of the activities available nearby. The coasts of Devon, and nearby Cornwall, are very accessible where there are beaches, coastal walks, and attractive seaside villages and towns.

The market town of Tavistock is about 15 minutes away and a nice place to explore. It is located on the edge of the area known as Dartmoor, an upland area of dramatic landscape. It is excellent for walking and has picturesque villages.
The historic city of Plymouth is an interesting place to visit. In the old port, you can visit the Mayflower Steps, which mark the spot from which the first English settlers set sail in 1620. If you are interested in visiting stately homes and gardens, there are many in the area for you to explore.
