 Family information

We have two grown-up children in their 30’s, a son and a daughter. Our daughter, who works as a sustainability consultant, lives nearby with her family. Our son, who is a software architect, and his family currently live in Helsinki. We have friends from many different countries some of them live in Cambridge where we used to live.

Philip
Although I like to read, especially history, I am a keen cyclist and enjoy walking to keep fit. We often visit National Trust gardens especially Anglesey Abbey which is very close to where our daughter lives. I still like to write computer programs and am learning Finnish.

Tarja
I enjoy reading, cooking and especially baking. I like walking and cycling and spending time with my family. As a tourist guide, I am very interested in local history.

About the local area

Burwell is a busy village 11 miles north east of Cambridge, 11 miles east of Ely and 4 miles north of the town of Newmarket. It has a population of 6120 people and has many attractive historical buildings as well as pubs and restaurants. Burwell also lies close to Wicken Fen Nature Reserve one of Europe’s most important wetlands and home to over 9000 species.

Cambridge with it’s universities and rich history is internationally famous and has many interesting places to visit as well as offering a wide range of shopping opportunities. Ely is another historical city with its landmark cathedral dating from 1083 which is visited by many tourists each year whilst Newmarket is renowned for its horse racing.

Whilst there are bus services to all these towns from Burwell we are happy to use our car to take students on either accompanied trips or for independent exploration.
