About
Melanie H

Hello,
My name is Mel and I have been a teacher for 14 years. I live with my husband Glenn and children William, Howard and Eve in the beautiful Oxfordshire countryside.
We are a very friendly and active family that enjoys sport, music, cinema and theatre. The River Thames is within walking distance and we can cycle or walk in the countryside directly from our front door. Our 110-year-old house is close to Oxford and London and provides a fantastic base for someone to learn English and experience the English way of life.

 Family information

I am very creative and enjoy making clothes, printing designs on fabrics, drawing and painting. I enjoy cycling in the local countryside, taking local yoga classes and going for a jog now and then. I really love to go to the local cinema in Wallingford, which is only 3 km away. I also like spending time in our lovely garden growing vegetables and flowers.

My husband Glenn is a writer who works from home. He is a very good cook and enjoys all sports, particularly skiing. He is Chairman of the local children’s football club, which is located 200 metres from our house. William is 23 and studying Sports Nutrition at university. He enjoys travel, photography and food and is an excellent skier. Howard is 20 and studying Football Coaching at university. He enjoys music, gaming and cinema and is a very good footballer. Eve is 17 and is studying Business at college. She enjoys music festivals, dancing and socialising and is a very good skier.

About the teacher’s accommodation

Our 3-bedroom house was built in 1904. It has a large back garden with a summer house and a workshop building. The large open plan kitchen is light and welcoming. The lounge has a big, comfortable sofa and a plasma screen TV. The study area is the front room of the house, with its wood burning stove. The student’s bedroom is the room with the arch window, it can be set up as a twin bedded room, or as a room for one person. The shared bathroom has a walk-in shower and a roll top bath. There is a separate toilet upstairs and downstairs.

About the local area

We live in a village called Cholsey, which is located in a lovely part of the Oxfordshire countryside. Cycling and walks in the countryside or along the River Thames can start from our front door. The village has a traditional pub, a village cafe, and a few small shops, as well as an Indian and a Chinese restaurant.

Wallingford is the nearest town and is only 3km away. It is located on the River Thames and there are boats to hire. It has castle ruins, an outdoor swimming pool and a great range of shops, cafes and restaurants. Cholsey Train Station is 300m from our house. A train can reach historic Oxford in under 30 minutes, London in 1 hour or the beautiful Roman city of Bath in just over 1 hour. Stratford-Upon-Avon, the birthplace of William Shakespeare is just over an hour’s drive away.
