South England

Karen E

Hello, my name is Karen. I have been teaching English for many years and I still love it. I can always find ways of making my lessons enjoyable and useful. I live in a small town which is popular with tourists and which is near to London, the coast, and lovely countryside. I love the Arts: books, theatre and classical music. Having grandchildren, I keep up to date with popular culture too!

Family information

I live alone but I have family nearby. One daughter lives just 5 km away and has five children; another daughter lives 24km away with her two children. My son lives in Australia, so we will not be visiting him! My third daughter is living in Prague with her husband and two children, but they will be returning to England next year. I enjoy going to the theatre and to concerts. I also volunteer at a charity shop and at a communication group for people who have had brain damage. My previous students have enjoyed going with me. I also belong to a very friendly group called NWR which is for women to meet and have discussions.  Female students have joined me at these meetings and are always welcome.

About the teacher’s accommodation

My home is a maisonette, so I do not have a private garden but I do have a balcony with a lovely view of the river, where I can enjoy the evening sun. It is just a short walk to the High Street, Cathedral, Castle and gardens. The student accommodation is a twin bedroom with a private bathroom. I live in Kent which is called “The Garden of England” because it has lovely scenery, gardens and castles..

About the local area

Rochester has a Castle and a Cathedral and is famous because Charles Dickens lived there. It is a popular place for tourists and has a lot of interesting little shops and restaurants.  A sports centre is just 3km away. I live just a short walk from Rochester railway station so getting to London is very quick and easy (about 50 minutes). Canterbury, which is a beautiful Cathedral city, is 51 km away, and so is Whitstable, a very attractive and popular seaside town. I can drive there in about 40 minutes, or can take the train. There are many castles, gardens and historic houses within a short drive.
