About
Gary G

I would be delighted to welcome you into my village home in the East of England. I live with my wife, Deborah, in a 16th century timber barn. We’ve recently renovated the house, so the 2 guest bedrooms and bathroom are completely new. Our son and daughter are in their 20s and have moved away so we have plenty of private space for students. We live in an attractive village called Orwell, within walking distance of a beautiful country estate called Wimpole Hall. We are 15 minutes from the lovely university city of Cambridge, 30 minutes from Stansted Airport and within an hour of London by train or car. I like watching all kinds of sport and live music. I also play football, tennis and table tennis and like riding my bicycle.

Family information

My wife, Deborah, and I have been living in the local area for 25 years. Deborah teaches at a university about 3 days a week. She likes growing flowers and vegetables in our garden, walking and cycling. We both like to travel and explore new places, both in the UK and abroad. The project of renovating our house has taken up much of the last 2 years and this is now complete. We have a son living and working in London and a daughter who is a student nurse in Cambridge. We have many friends in our village with teenagers in the house. I love to be outside, particularly in the summer. I play 7-a-side football every week nearby and tennis on the village courts. A student would be very welcome to join me for football, tennis, table tennis, cycling or walking! Otherwise Deborah and I enjoy visiting new places and showing our guests round the sights (we both used to be tour guides).

About the teacher’s accommodation

Our house stands alone. The 400 year old original barn is on 2 floors: it is here upstairs where we sleep, above the lounge. The large, brand new kitchen/dining room is in the centre of the house and we learn English either here at the table or outside if it is fine. The new wing contains 2 student bedrooms, private bathroom and cloakroom, a good distance from our bedroom. There is wifi throughout, with USB ports and a TV in each bedroom. In the lounge we have BT Sport, Eurosport and Netflix.

About the local area

The pretty village of Orwell has about 1000 inhabitants, a pub, shop, 2 churches, public spaces for walking and tennis courts (where I regularly play). You can easily walk or cycle to the neighbouring Wimpole Hall house and gardens. Cambridge is 15 minutes by car or 40 by bus and it is packed with shops and sights, including the world-famous university. You can go punting on the river, hire a bike or just enjoy the easy going nature of Cambridge’s international community. Cambridge has great restaurants and cafes plus cinemas and live music events. The nearest train stations to home are 10 minutes away, offering frequent services to Cambridge (15 minutes) and London (about 45 minutes).
