Debora S

I am a teacher of English as a foreign language and I have been a home stay teacher for a number of years. I find home stay teaching an effective way of learning a language because I can focus on the specific needs of each student. Home stay teaching allows me create a rapport with students and see them make progress which is very rewarding. I like to create my own teaching resources and plan my lessons so they are tailored to the student’s goals and objectives. It is nice meeting new people from different cultures and planning excursions which they will enjoy. I have worked in other educational settings such as adult education centres, private schools and further educational colleges and I have taught all levels from beginner to advanced. Before I became a home stay teacher, I worked in London for a large corporate bank in various areas such as collateral monitoring, treasury and customer services. I am also a holistic therapist.

About the teacher’s accommodation

I live in a large semi-detached 19th century house. It has four storeys and sea views. There are three designated rooms for students: a single, a twin and a triple. The bathroom is on the second floor. The house is located just off the High Street and three minutes walk from the railway station and sea front, respectively.

About the local area

I live in the small town of Broadstairs in the county of Kent in south east England. It is a wonderful mixture of Victorian architecture, hidden cobbled squares, cliff top walks and sandy beaches. You will find shops, restaurants, bars, pubs and leisure facilities. There are many exciting things to do and see in and around the town. There are surf schools; tennis courts; a zoo; museums; and stately homes and gardens, such as Quex Park (dating from the 1400s). The historic city of Canterbury is not far. It is lively and busy place with an ancient cathedral and excellent shopping amongst many things. There are a number of picturesque, medieval castles in the area which I find students really enjoy, such as Dover and Leeds. For literature enthusiasts, we have the Charles Dickens Festival and museum whilst Canterbury has connections with the 14th century author Geoffrey Chaucer. We also have a beach hut where we keep a kayak and beach games in the summer months.
