I help adult students of all abilities to understand and speak English clearly, and with confidence. I discuss with a student how to best structure their course, and to establish their own style of learning. The students will discover for themselves how to use practical English in a world of different cultures that are united by common themes, such as family, work and play.

I believe that English can be more easily understood and communicated if attention is given to developing listening and speaking skills. English is practised during outings to places of interest. This process should be stimulating, and enjoyable. Attention is also given to reading which includes newspaper articles, business magazines and poetry (reinforce grammar) and writing (reports, emails). Speaking a good standard of clear English is important as it may lead to improved employment prospects, a more profitable business or higher academic qualifications and greater lifestyle options.

 Family information

I live at home with my wife Beata, who is from Poland. Our children are children no more and have left home to pursue their own careers and life’s destiny. Learning languages has always been of interest in our family, and our children are both bilingual. We used to have pets, a rabbit, cats and a canary (not together), but no longer. We have a garden at the back of the house that is home to many species of birds which our neighbours’ cats eye with anticipation! We also chase away foxes who have made the back gardens their own. They in turn stalk and chase, and sometimes catch, grey squirrels who own the trees.

I used to play football and cricket. I have participated in hundreds of games during my distinguished playing career, although some would disagree! I haven’t swung a golf club in anger for several years. I like to read about my home village of London. The Roman era is a fascinating one, and we can take a look at some of the old sites. I enjoy travelling around Poland, swimming in the lakes and practising my Polish. I still have my teeth or most of them anyway! I understand the difficulties a student encounters whilst learning a foreign language.

About the teacher’s accommodation

Our home is a cottage style end of terrace property that was built circa 1915. The rooms are relatively small but comfortable. We built a rear extension which serves as the ‘classroom’. It looks out to the garden. It faces north so we, or rather Beata, designed it so that the maximum amount of light finds its way into the room and onto the books! It’s important to have a good night’s sleep and the bed and room are warm and comfortable. There is a separate ‘wet’ room in which a student can take a shower.

About the local area

There is an indoor tennis sports centre, situated in a local park, a leisurely four minute walk away. It also has a gym and fitness area. There is a swimming centre a five minute drive away that also has a general fitness area. The swimming centre can be reached by bus, although some students are happy to walk back home which takes about 25 minutes. There are riding stables near to our home.
Sutton town centre with its range of shops and cinema is an easy and comfortable ten minute walk away by foot. There is a local general store at the end of our road. There are several very nice parks nearby such as Nonsuch, Morden and Banstead Common.
Wimbledon Common, and the All England Tennis Centre, are also nearby and take under ten minutes to reach by car.
It takes around 30 minutes to reach central London by underground from the nearest tube station at Morden (Northern line).
