About
Ann M

I am an English teacher and have taught in secondary school. I have a keen interest in travel and have lived abroad at various times in my life. I love meeting people from other cultures and introducing them to the fantastic range of English cultural experiences near my home. I look forward to working with students and designing English lessons to engage confidently with the language.

Family information

My four grown-up children all live away from home now, and are employed in very varied ways: from PR, to TV film production to criminal psychology! They visit occasionally, or we meet in nearby London where two of them live, and we spend holidays like Christmas and Easter together. I currently live alone, but my partner, Jeff, is a regular visitor. I love reading (predictably!) and belong to a book group. I have a very attractive garden, and for me gardening is a great way to get some exercise. I enjoy cooking and trying out new recipes which I would enjoy sharing with students. I enjoy walking, and have done some very long walks while on holiday (the Camino to Santiago de Compostela, for example) and Surrey has some great walking countryside. I’m passionate about the theatre and try to go frequently – mainly to London – and this could be an exciting option for students too.

About the teacher’s accommodation

My house is a Victorian semi-detached house in a quiet road close to the village centre. The village has a range of shops including supermarkets, pharmacies, department store. Students have a private bedroom (double bed) and use of the shared bathroom with bath and shower. Sitting room, dinng room and kitchen are all available for the student’s use. The garden has a seating and dining area.

About the local area

I live in the largest village in England: Cranleigh. It is very attractive and has many typically English features: cricket green, old pubs, cottage hospital. It also has a leisure centre with a swimming pool, gym, tennis courts; and an Arts centre where music, comedy and films are on the programme. Further afield (8 miles) is Guildford, a historic market town with its old castle, a cathedral and plenty of shops and restaurants. From Guildford station it’s only a 35 minute train trip to London Waterloo with all of the attractions of the capital city. In the other direction is the south coast with Brighton only an hour’s drive away. Hampton Court, Wisley gardens and Jane Austen’s home in Chawton are all within easy reach.
