About
Alan R

I am a teacher of English as a foreign language. I have been a home stay teacher for over 5 years, welcoming students of all ages. Home stay teaching is immensely rewarding for both teacher and student. Teachers can plan tailor made lessons and students make rapid progress with their English language skills. Studying in the relaxed and friendly environment of your teacher’s home is also conducive to good learning outcomes. My first career was as a production journalist, working at a senior level on national newspapers. I continue to work as a journalist on a freelance basis, primarily on lifestyle and current affairs magazines.

 Family information

I live with my wife, Helen. She works for a charity and her hobbies include reading, cooking and running. We have two young sons (dates of birth: 2000 and 2002) who enjoy sports, music and computer games. Like me, they play musical instruments. We all enjoy having students to stay and welcome them to join in family life. We have a young dog as well as a cat. I enjoy current affairs and I take a keen interest in keeping up to date with the latest developments. I am very passionate about music and I play the piano, guitar and the trumpet. I also enjoy swimming regularly and going to the gym to try and keep fit.

About the teacher’s accommodation

I live in five bedroom terraced home in the northern London suburb of Crouch End. There is a nice garden for students to enjoy when the weather is nice.

About the local area

Crouch End is a very pleasant and quite lively neighbourhood. It has many good restaurants, cafés and pubs, along with a lovely park, a swimming pool, gym and tennis courts. The historic Alexander Palace is nearby, which has exhibitions, concerts, a boating lake, skateboard park and café. We are also near to Hampstead and Highgate, which are two of the oldest ‘villages’ in London and well worth a visit. They are nice good shops and eating places. My home is an ideal location from which to explore all the sights and attractions of central London.
