Scotland is a very interesting place to visit, combining some of the best scenery in the UK with elegant and historic cities. It has a rich, distinctive culture for visitors to explore and enjoy: Scottish tartan and kilts, specialities like smoked fish, shortbread and haggis, Scotch whisky, the poetry of Robert Burns and Burns Night celebrations, Scottish dancing, the Highland Games and much more.
Scotland divides into two main regions with the Lowlands to the south and the Highlands to the north. Both regions are full of rivers, lochs (Scottish lakes), surrounding islands and romantic castles. The Lowlands are lush, green and tranquil, with gently rolling hills. Loch Ness, home of the famous ‘Monster’, is here and was recently voted the UK’s favourite tourist attraction. This is the land of heroes such as William Wallace and Robert the Bruce, who fought for Scottish Independence, and the home of Robert Burns. Scotland’s main cities are also in the Lowlands. The capital, Edinburgh, is one of the most beautiful cities in Europe as well as the second richest city in the UK (after London). Set on volcanic rocks with its skyline dominated by Edinburgh Castle, it is famous for its medieval Old Town and Georgian New Town, its galleries, restaurants and designer shopping, and its twelve annual festivals including the huge summer arts festival. Glasgow is Scotland’s biggest and liveliest city, with superb Victorian and Gothic architecture and top museums such as the Burrell Collection. St Andrews is another beautiful city, known as ‘the home of golf’ and the site of prestigious tournaments.
The mountainous Highland region is wild and inspiring with towering mountain peaks including Ben Nevis, the highest mountain in Britain, spectacular Glen Coe, scene of a terrible battle in Scottish history, and Loch Lomond. The region has a stunning coastline with sandy beaches and shimmering turquoise seas. It has wonderful wildlife, such as dolphins, whales, deer, eagles and otters, and offers many outdoor activities, including the UK’s only ski resorts. The Highlands have strong associations with the Royal Family, who often spend their holidays here at Balmoral Castle. Inverness is the regional capital and is a perfect base for exploring, while ‘the Granite City’ of Aberdeen is also well worth a visit.
