East MidlandsThe East Midlands has been a region of great historical importance from the Roman, Anglo-Saxon and Norman eras through to the 18th and 19th centuries when it played a key part in Britain’s industrial rise to power with its coal, iron and steel industries. It has many interesting cities, towns and places to visit and many outstanding landscapes.
East of EnglandThe East of England is an unspoilt region which has preserved its character, architecture and traditions through the centuries. It is known for its unique lowlying landscape, which inspired Britain’s great painter, John Constable. It contains the ancient university city of Cambridge, the cathedral cities of Norwich and Ely, historic Colchester, many picturesque market towns and villages, and a variety of seaside resorts.
Heart of EnglandThe 'Heart of England' is a quaint name for the central region of England which includes the counties of the West Midlands and Birmingham, Warwickshire, Shropshire and Staffordshire. The region boasts a diversity of beautiful countryside and industrial heritage.
LondonOne of the great capital cities of the world, London is the home of the British Royal Family, the seat of Parliament, the centre of Britain’s financial and cultural life, and host to the 2012 Olympics.
North of EnglandThe North of England is much less populated than the South and contains some of England’s most beautiful scenery, including the Lake District, as well as many large cities and medium-sized towns. Its rich historical and cultural heritage has left much for visitors to explore, from the Roman Emperor Hadrian’s Wall to Durham Cathedral, or from William Wordsworth to the Beatles.
Republic of IrelandIreland has a huge amount to offer the visitor, with astonishingly beautiful scenery, a fascinating Celtic heritage full of myths and legends, a rich living culture, delightful cities and picturesque towns and villages. Most important of all, there is the special quality of the Irish people who are famous for being friendly, sociable and great talkers with ‘the gift of the gab’. They love having fun and even have a special term for Irish fun – ‘the crack’.
ScotlandScotland is a very interesting place to visit, combining some of the best scenery in the UK with elegant and historic cities. It has a rich, distinctive culture for visitors to explore and enjoy: Scottish tartan and kilts, specialities like smoked fish, shortbread and haggis, Scotch whisky, the poetry of Robert Burns and Burns Night celebrations, Scottish dancing, the Highland Games and much more.
South East of EnglandThe south east of England is the most highly populated and the richest region of Britain. It has a number of medium-sized cities of which the largest is Brighton, plus many attractive towns and delightful villages where visitors can enjoy an English cream tea or visit a traditional pub. With its easy access to London, excellent shopping and entertainment facilities and exceptional cultural heritage, this region has something for everyone.
South West EnglandThe south west of England is a rural area with beautiful coastal and inland scenery, the warmest climate in Britain and top visitor attractions including Stonehenge, Salisbury Cathedral and Bath. Packed with historical, cultural and mythological associations, it is the UK’s favourite holiday destination.
WalesWales is a small country with beautiful scenery, a dynamic capital city, lots of places to visit, and a very special culture. The Welsh are rightly proud of their national identity which includes the Welsh language, spoken by 20% of the population, the distinctive national costume with its tall hats, the Welsh dragon which features on the flag, a passion for rugby and a huge talent for singing.
