Getting TEFL Qualified


To join Homelingua and teach and host students in your home, you will need to have English as your mother tongue and have the Cambridge CELTA, Trinity CertTESOL qualification or equivalent. These qualifications provide you with a foundation in English language teaching theory and practice. The courses can be done full or part time at a range of institutions in the UK and abroad. Typically, the full-time courses run for 4 weeks, with the part-time courses taking around 3 months to complete. The courses are demanding but extremely rewarding!

CELTA - Certificate in English Language Teaching to Adults

If you wish to acquire a basic qualification to teach English to speakers of other languages - either in the UK or abroad - the Certificate in English Language Teaching to Adults or CELTA is one of the recommended course.

The Cambridge CELTA is the most widely accepted initial teaching qualification in English language teaching.

What is Cambridge CELTA?

The Certificate in English Language Teaching to Adults is an international TEFL training and certification program. Originally known as the RSA Certificate, the program became the RSA/Cambridge CTEFLA in 1985. The name changed to RSA/Cambridge CELTA in 1996 and to Cambridge CELTA in 2001.

CELTA - Cambridge ESOL's Certificate in English Language Teaching to Adults is one of the world's foremost initial qualifications for people who wish to become professional teachers of English language. It is accepted throughout the world by organisations which employ English language teachers.

Cambridge ESOL works with international ELT organisations to ensure the acceptance of Certificate in English Language Teaching to Adults (CELTA) globally. According to Cambridge ESOL more than 10,000 candidates complete a Certificate in English Language Teaching to Adults (CELTA) course each year.

Trinity CertTESOL

The Trinity Certificate in Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages (CertTESOL) is another recommended TESOL or TEFL certificate designed for those with little or no experience of teaching English. It equips candidates with the basic skills and knowledge needed to take up a first post as an ESOL teacher. It gives an introduction to the theory and practice of contemporary English teaching and an insight into the challenges facing the learner and the role of the teacher.

The CertTESOL is accredited in England by the Qualifications and Curriculum Authority at Level 4 of the National Qualifications Framework. It is accepted by the British Council as an initial TESOL or TEFL qualification for teachers in its accredited teaching organisations in the UK and in its own teaching operations overseas. Credits are also awarded towards degree programmes offered by the Open University in the UK.
