Learn English Homestays for Young Learners

Celine is age 13 and attending a Boarding school in the UK. Celine will soon begin studying for her GCSE's in school and is using a 1 week half term holiday to brush up her English conversation skills.

Celine has spent the week on a Learn English Homestay course with our home English teacher Nicole. Celine has lived in the UK already for over 4 months, but to help her with her GCSE studies she has chosen a total immersion course. During her week of English homestay with Nicole, Celine has greatly improved her vocabulary skills.

During this lesson, Nicole and Celine are using an intermediate level story book. Nicole begins by reading a short part of the story. Nicole then asks Celine some questions about the story before reading it again. Since celine has lived in the UK for 3 months, her listening skills are already very good and she can identify several words that she doesn't yet know. Instead of giving the meaning of the word, Nicole encourages Celine to guess the meaning of the word from the context of the story. Eventually Celine arrives at the meaning of the word. Nicole then encourages Celine to create new sentences using the new words.

During the lesson, Nicole is also prompting Celine to recall and use some new vocabulary that she came across in yesterdays lessons. This really is total immersion English learning and after 1 hour teacher and student are tired, but it has been a great lesson.
